Ok, let me say right off the bat, I heart Facebook. Just trying to source out the truth and will the real answer please speak up. The “Suggest to Friends” feature on Facebook has apparently gone bye bye. Facebook says it’s a temporary bug. To the best of my research ability, it sounds like it will be back, but only to page admins. This is a key method for increasing fan numbers on pages, so I’ll be exploring more ways to accomplish this regardless of what happens.
Here’s a link with Facebook acknowledging the issue. I also recommend “liking” this page so you can keep up to date. http://www.facebook.com/KnownIssues?sk=wall#!/KnownIssues
This article seems the most accurate at least for what is actually happening right now. http://creativebizguru.com/wp-admin/post-new.phpp://www.insidefacebook.com/2011/01/21/suggest-to-friend-bug
This article goes into a little more depth: http://www.insidefacebook.com/2011/01/28/removal-suggest-friends-pages
This link shows that Facebook has updated the info to only admins having access, but it doesn’t address the fact that the function is not working at all right now. http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=19713
The lesson once again, is that if we want to enjoy and get the most out of this incredibly powerful and free tool, we have to be willing to roll with the punches of what Facebook decides to do deliberately along with whatever bugs might come along in the process. It happens people. Everyone is human, even Facebook. For now, it’s a bit tricky to deduce how much there is of each with the “Suggest to Friends” feature. I’m just hoping that the compromise is that they fix the bug, let admins have access to “Suggest to Friends” and we all go on our merry way. There is some school of thought that suggests they’re taking away the “Suggest to Friends” feature to increase the rates of ad sales. I’d like to think that that’s not the case. May depend on whether The Social Network wins a bunch of Oscars this weekend and how Mr. Zuckerberg responds!
Meanwhile, caveat emptor, even when it’s free. This is an important alert to Graphic and Website Designers, Social Media Managers and the like to remind your clients and yourselves to keep things like this in mind as we all travel through the evolution that is social media.
Oh yeah, and feel free to “like” and share my page if you got something out of this article, since for the time being, I can’t “Suggest” it to you and your friends! http://www.facebook.com/pages/LisaBeth-Weber/147852279044
